Favorite Travel Memories of 2016

travel memories

As 2016 comes to an end, it’s time to look back over the past twelve months’ worth of adventures and reminisce about the year’s best travel moments. Dan and I continued to travel widely through Europe, exploring 19 countries this year, 15 of which we hadn’t been to before. I know I am wayyy behind on posting from the past six months, but a few projects and such have diverted my attention recently; so I’m just now getting around to catching up.

I said it last year and I’ll say it again, seeing the world has always been my dream, and I’m grateful for the generous adventures this year brought. In the same fashion as last year, here is the round-up of our favorite travel memories of 2016!

January//Magical Lantern Festival in London

Feeling like kids again as we winded through London’s inaugural Magic Lantern Festival at Chiswick House and Gardens to see the over 50-plus beautifully sculpted colored lantern installations in whimsical shapes and sizes forming animals, birds, buildings, flowers, abstract designs, and a 66-meter dragon centerpiece.

March//Prague, Czech Republic

Exploring the pretty, pastel “City of A Hundred Spires” while czech-ing out the city’s unique Easter markets. Similar to Europe’s famed Christmas markets, think hand-painted Easter eggs instead of Christmas ornaments, the Easter bunny instead of St. Nick, an Easter tree instead of a Christmas tree, the same delicious food stall fare and hot drinks, slightly warmer weather, and you have the celebration of springtime and Easter (Velikonoce) in Prague.

April//Normandy, France

Traveling the historic D-Day sites of Normandy with a well-rounded and knowledgeable group of military history enthusiasts, including some members of our party whose relatives had fought in the invasion. Over the three days of our tour of area museums and strategic battle sites, we were poignantly reminded of the incredible feat and sacrifices of a brave generation.

Sailing with Celebrity cruises to stunning Santorini, with its whitewashed villas tumbling down the cliffside, and eating the most amazing souvlaki and tzatziki in Athens post-climb to the Acropolis to stand in awe of the Parthenon.

June//Baltic Cruise

Besides being persona non grata‘d in Russia (a memorable story for another day!), indulgently gorging on Belgian chocolate truffles from Dumon Chocolatier in Bruges, Belgium, and admiring the architecture in Gdansk, Poland. We so enjoyed our brief time in Poland that we are planning a long trip there this coming year!

Wild camping under the stars in our little rented Happy Camper caravan, soaking in natural hot springs, eating endless amounts of Skyr yogurt, chasing waterfalls, balking at the price of groceries, and trekking on a glacier — our road trip around Iceland’s famed Ring Road was incredible!

September//Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

Admiring geology’s handiwork at Giant’s Causeway. Beautiful, wild, and dramatic!

September/Jurassic Coast, United Kingdom

Taking in the expansive views of the Dorset headlands looking out over Durdle Door Arch and being junior archeologists for the afternoon fossil hunting along the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast.

Driving through the rich, fall foliage of the Scottish Highlands through scenic Loch Lomond National Park up to the Isle of Skye, stopping to admire the brooding Eilean Donan Castle.
