I can’t believe it took Dan and I over a year and a half to finally visit the deliciousness that is the Maltby Street Market! After a couple weeks of tonsillitis and holiday lethargy induced cabin fever I was ready to get outside into the fresh air and explore the area of Bermondsey last Saturday.
Dan and I are no newbies to food markets and like true aficionados we walked up and down the row of stalls checking out the offerings before carefully making our decisions. Nothing worse than filling up on something potentially mediocre at the first vendor you see only to walk by more enticing options a few stalls down!
First up? A no fat, no calorie Stilton, bacon, and pear chutney grilled cheese sandwich from The Cheese Truck. After a five minute wait under the heavy iron I was handed the best thing I’ve ever seen since sliced bread, or rather in this case between sliced bread. The hot oozing Stilton was like a messy melting ice cream cone on the hottest day of summer so I had to quickly polish off the sandwich before I could snag a picture. Sorry ’bout that!
Next up was the Dub Sub pulled pork sandwich from The Sub Cult complete with cracklings, pickled red onion, rocket, and a hot jerk sauce. It saw a quick end as well.
We were feeling a little thirsty by now, so we made our way over to Little Bird Gin for some libations. Dan nursed one of their signature gin and tonics with a colorful slice of ruby red grapefruit while I sipped away on a Cosmopolitan twist with a hint of sage called Wild Card.
The cold, damp weather and post-holiday fatigue must have kept the crowds away so we had no problem snagging an empty table to linger over our drinks and people watch. On a gorgeous sunny day in June I imagine this narrow alleyway is probably packed!
The rain clouds overhead threatened to loosen their reins and send a torrent of raindrops down on us so we hightailed ourselves back to the tube station, perhaps going completely out of our way to stop at Peggy Porschen’s on the way home for banoffee cupcakes ; -)
