What better compliment could I give the pretty pastel city of Prague other than it has now become one of my favorite European cities we’ve visited! (If you’re interested, its competition is Amsterdam, Granada, and Lisbon).
As it seems all great cities do, a river runs through Prague with the famous Charles Bridge and its 30 statues spanning the Vltava River leading pedestrians from the Old Town over to the historic neighborhood of Mala Strana and further up the hill, the 9th century Prague Castle complex.
Hint: if you’re going to get up at an ungodly hour before the sunrise to photograph the bridge before it gets gets inundated with the day’s crowds, make sure your camera battery is inside your camera before you leave the hotel instead of having to race the rising sun while you run back to the hotel for it. True story.
Nicknamed the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’, Prague is an architect’s dream since it’s almost thousand year span of pristine and varied architecture has for the most part escaped the destruction of both natural disaster and war unlike many other major European cities. One can see building styles ranging from Romanesque, to Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, Cubist, Neo-Classical, and modern. As such, many period pieces are filmed in Prague and after a few lost turns while returning to our hotel one afternoon we stumbled upon a shooting location of what appeared to be a movie set during WWII.
Once hidden behind the Iron Curtain following WWII, it wasn’t until the fall of communism in 1989 that Prague was visited much by Westerners. Nowadays, the beautiful old city has emerged as a popular city-break destination in Europe and for good reason!
Here’s what you’ll find: colorful Baroque buildings, Gothic churches, a medieval Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Jewish Cemetery, Petrin Tower, Vysherad Fortress, tasty cuisine, delicious coffee, and if you caught our previous blog post, Easter Markets!
Join us (and our camera!) during our weekend holiday capturing this amazing city from catching the sunrise on the Charles Bridge to dreamily watching that same sun set over Prague Castle in a spectacular wash of deep purple and pink.
Oh Prague, you had me at hello!
