New year, new adventures! 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting travel year for us to new locales and experiences as well as much-loved frequently visited destinations such as London and “home” with family and friends in San Diego. While we love the architecture, gastronomy, museums, and the electric buzz that pulses through cities big and small across the world, nature is what really re-energizes us and some of our best travel memories come from trips that were centered around the great outdoors such as our campervan trip around Iceland’s Ring Road chasing waterfall after waterfall, kayaking the deep blue fjords in Norway, steaming ourselves in the hot springs of Peru’s Colca Canyon, and seeing Old Faithful erupt right on time at Yellowstone National Park.
With all the hecticness of preparing for and moving to Peru last year and the ensuing roller coaster of emotions with uprooting our lives once again and continuing to find our groove here, our travel plans this year aim to find that tranquil connection to nature.
With the whole of South America still unseen by both of us, we have a few “bucket list” type trips here that we have set our sights on accomplishing this year such as trekking a portion of the Inca Trail to enter through the famed Sun Gate of Machu Picchu, a train trip through Ecuador admiring the rugged, wild beauty of the highlands before heading into the jungle via canoe, and hearing the thundering, deafening roar of Iguazu Falls along the Argentina/Brazil border.
Also on the bucket list — as well as a new continent for us to touch down in — is a 200-kilometer road trip along South Africa’s stunning stretch of coastline from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, the famed Garden Route, to sample the wine region’s exclusive pinotage varietal, a stop in Hermanus for the best land-based whale watching in the world, and the Addo Elephant National Park. From there we will head up to Kenya and Tanzania on a safari to witness the circle of life with the Great Wildebeest Migration, visit with locals from a Maasai village, get a different perspective of the wildlife from above in a hot air balloon ride, and to-be-decided, perhaps even trek Mount Kilimanjaro!
Cheers to what we’ll discover right outside our front door, to halfway around the world, and the many miles in between!
